During week 2 of Contextual Studies, we explored the introduction to the Research Essay (1500 words) through topics we could choose in a timeline from 1850-2000. This used 'padlet' and allowed me to refresh my knowledge of different art movements and their evolution over time, as someone who previously completed an Art History A-level.
Contextualising art within important historical events such as revolutions and wars was also important, as things such as WWI would greatly shape mediums such as contemporary cinema. It was also important to cover fashion and architectural evolution in order to develop my visual library for later reference.
80's and 70's aesthetic
Huw Feather (Contextual Studies Lecturer) used the 1980's and 1970's as an example of decade aesthetic and how this can forge personal and cinematic stories. These points were used as examples:
terrestrial tv
Loft Living
Laura Ashley
The influence of the underground disco scene
Watch It's a Sin to understand the 80's aesthetic
70's were 'grimy'
Personalised fashion (no 'designer' labels). Trent was a fashion centre in 80's: Not designed by designers but by M&s, etc. Fashion boutiques
This was all connected with drinking, eating, student life etc. Interesting clothes were either unavailable or expensive
Power-cuts, 3 days a week of power, 2 days with no power, power back on etc. (Thatcherism)
Rocketman did not have the ring of grime that the 70's realistically had
He also stressed these points when forming decade research:
When designing, think of the tone of your design
Find out popular/unpopular shops within each time period
Media mentioned to consume:
Erte (costume design)
Phantom thread
Corrie in the 60's - birth of the 'kitchen sink drama'.
