The 2nd Project announced for the Design for Film and TV course is in collaboration with Newstead Abbey and involves creating a group installation based on the original Alice In Wonderland Stories by Lewis Carroll.
This also involves direct collaboration with a Design for Theatre and Live Performance student which will allow me to strengthen cross-disciplinary collaboration skills.
Initial Ideas
During the first session, multiple 'Initial Ideas' mind-maps were created, not only exploring general ideas but also the themes each individual will develop prior to meeting on Wednesday 11am, outside of class times, to finalize the chosen idea and move onto creating loglines and concept sketches.
Mood-boards and Ideas
The Ideas and installation concept I decided to create a mood-board on was the 'Living Flowers' and 'Painted Roses/Flamingo Croquet' scenes found in multiple Alice renditions.
This is the mood-board, resulting from my research into multiple sources of inspiration including hand-sculpted flowers, crepe paper, the original and revival Disney style, red/blue lighting effects and iridescent texturing which would visually interest a younger audience.
I also explored gradient mapping to experiment with pastel and iridescent effects.
Below are the 2 other alternate ideas explored through group moodboards
Mad Hatter's Workshop
From this point, it was decided in a meeting with Helen Davies that the Mad Hatter concept was the most practical and creatively experimental and therefore it was decided that each individual would create concept art over the weekend surrounding the Mad Hatter's Workshop theme, based primarily around the 'Ground Floor' piano / fireplace room (shown in the brief proposal power-point).
I wanted to incorporate a mixed-media approach, with key elements of improvement being: SketchUp, model making and traditional concept work. Therefore, I aimed to create concepts primarily based around these mediums.
Concept art
I created a series of sketches in Daler and Rowney alcohol markers exploring the decoration and concealment of the piano within space, as well as one gouache study of the room with potential incorporated set decoration elements such as stickers, hanging hats etc.
Brief proposal power-point
I believe the brief proposal went successfully, with some feedback from Kerry and Helen:
- The piano could be a surface we are unable to dress or use as a counter for any props
-> This issue could be solved by incorporating a table into the room as a surface for our set decoration elements
- The room itself could be too small
-> The group could scale down ideas to a more manageable physical and time-based scale
- Items such as shelves cannot be placed onto the wall
-> Using existing fixings and perhaps leaning elements against the wall could be a solution

Action Plan
The created action plan involved me being the designated laser-print designer as well as photoshop and digital arts group member. This is due to me recently learning how to print 'laser lace' in Skills Passport and finding it an exciting aspect of design formulation!
In 'Newstead LIVE: Act 2', I will explore the design process of many aspects of the Mad Hatter's workshop, including the finalisation of the room layout and labelling of any props to be created.
