'Period Elements' project Part 1: Initial research and planning

Updated: Jan 15, 2023

This project is the fourth DFTV coursework piece so far, and involves introducing more thorough research into our work in order to create a period-accurate living room, 12x12m.

The Brief

Considerations:

For this project our minimum required output is... - A ‘moodboard’ showing inspirational references from your visual research. - Development work demonstrated with sketches, SketchUp, rough plans/ visuals/models to explain your process. - Plan & Elevations – 1:50 scale, details may be larger scale. (At least one sheet). - A 1:50 white model (as minimum) of your set. Please ensure this is robust/securely fixed before presentation. Alternatively, (or in addition, if liked) you may produce a Sketch Up model of your set. Whichever you choose, this should be accompanied by or include an indication of finishes/textures etc. - Visuals: a minimum of two, in colour, communicating key shots & details in wide screen (16:9) format, illustrating your set in use (include people). - A short (1-2min) non-edited video from the model demonstrating camera shot potential of your design. - You must submit a PowerPoint Presentation of your work (for use on presentation day) to the ‘Period Elements’ project dropbox, in the Module Learning Room on NOW, by 7pm MONDAY 13 February 2023. This should contain all elements listed above. During the following week (Tuesday 14 February, or Friday 17 February 2023) you will give an individual verbal & visual presentation to peers / staff. - You will have a 15 minute slot – approx. 5 mins to present, 5 mins for questions & discussion, & 5 mins for feedback. You may improve elements in response to feedback, for your end of year/module portfolio. Wix Remember that you are required to update your Wix Journal.

The period I decided to work within was Late Victorian Arts & Crafts & Edwardian (1880-1910). I created an 'inspiration board' to express the reasons why I chose this period!

I then created a board of considerations for research and looks, to inform my process moving forward.

The brief included a list of period-centric resources:

William Morris etc- at

Merton Abbey Mills, Red

House

Phil Webb architect

William Morris museum

in Walthamstow

The Philharmonic pub,

Liverpool 1898–1900

John Rylands Library

Manchester

Nottingham: Hockley

Tram museum-

Cromford/ Matlock

Charles Rennie

Mackintosh (Glasgow

Museum)

Russell Coates museum in

Bournemouth

Films: Suffragette, The

Railway Children

Titanic film (1911)

The Forsythe Saga

31 December 2022

I began my Period Elements thought process by deciding what the 'ambience' of the living room space would be to me as a designer. I created a Pinterest board with ideas for inspiration, which includes organic arts and crafts elements alongside character studies for the inhabitants of the space

I would describe the ambience of my space as intending to be:

  • Romantic

  • Organic

  • Whimsical

  • Mystical

  • Domestic

  • Character-filled (the characters will be reflected within the space, as in any other piece of set design for film or TV)

From this point onward, I will continue to add to this inspiration board but will also need to do the following to begin my source research:

  • Watch film & TV based within the period (eg. Mary Poppins, Room with a View etc.)

  • Read primary sources from the era

  • Research the art history of the period and it's influences (eg. Cultural, the impact of Art Nouveau on the Arts and Crafts movement etc)
