Period elements project part 10: written source analysis + concept work

In this post, I will develop my research (and concept via photoshop).

I completed written research in the Boots library, which I found helpful as I could sketch out plans from reference images. Being in the library also allows me to focus clearly on my work without distractions, though one drawback is I'm not able to work traditionally on concept work as I would be if I was in my studio.

In talks with my course tutor, we have been discussing the concern of having my stage appear too theatrical with the 4-wall setup. I am developing the plan in order to minimise this.

Below are the 3 staging layouts, in order of development.

Camera concepts for design #3 (sample furniture):

I feel as though there is something 'off' about the composition of the larger room - it does not have the same domestic air as my original sketches. I think this could be fixed by moving the fireplace to the centre of the room's 'point', with the bay window and door being on opposite sides of the room from one another.

I would then have further space for decoration, writing desks etc. without the worry of an unbalanced composition. I could even turn the fireplace into an inglenook, to create a flow into the natural point at the centre of the camera's view.

Hand-written period research:

Feedback

- It was suggested that I take inspiration more closely from period-accurate Edwardian detached homes rather than toeing the line of artistic experimentation with my half-hexagonal floor plan.

- I found examples of fireplaces within their own bay windows, and suggested this though there were concerns about how this would fit with an overall home.

- The idea of placing the design within a tower was suggested to me, though I feel it would be period inaccurate as turret-shaped housing was of an earlier period.

Below is the approved email concept I created following this feedback

Following this, I am now able to finalise my research onto one Canva document. This will allow me to explore the specific style suites + art movements + furniture styles I want to use in this final room:
