Period Elements project part 3: cultural context and research timeline

The brief stated the importance of a good cultural knowledge of 1880-1910's society, which I think will be presented best in a timeline via Canva (which allows for an infinite mind-mapping canvas).

To reiterate the brief considerations:

Once I have completed this to-do list, I will decide upon a year (or span of years) in which to base my setting, before moving into combining period-accurate research with characterisation.

To Do:

Create a Canva timeline of events

Split this timeline into 3 sections: Art history, cultural history, political history

Add pictures relevant to changing fashions and interests

Add resource links which cover the years

Now that I have had an opportunity to explore the history of the period, I find myself being drawn to the edwardian period, particularly the late 1890's. If I were to choose this period, i would have the ability to create a living space which both incorporates elements of the Arts and Crafts movement and the invention of the phonograph and electrical lighting. It would act as a transitional style point to the Edwardian period. I worry however that it would be difficult to achieve this transitional look whilst staying truthful to the reality of the time and will therefore base my decision on the sources I am able to gather, deciding from that point which era I have the best ability to reference.

Late Victorian resources

Edwardian resources

I believe from my resource gathering I would be most comfortable creating a space in the style of the early 1900's (eg. 1901-1903), wherein time lag would account for some yet not all furniture decisions.

From this point, I will begin to study 'Source books' from both periods to decide upon the style I wish to adopt
